I have a .54 caliber CVA “Mackinac Rifle” can anyone tell me anything about the gun? Such as how old it is and suggested loads. I’ve shot it twice with a 70 grain blackpowder charge and a 430 grain bullet. I hope to shoot again this weekend.
Thanks

It’s been a week. I guess this was the wrong place to ask about a CVA gun. I haven’t have any responses, so I’m going to Log off. I’ll look elsewhere.

Sorry, Carl. I have been out of town and missed your question. My bet is that this is an older sidelock that was once sold by CVA. Probably in the late 80s or early 90s. As for your load, starting with 70 grains of powder sounds good. However, the bullet you are using is a bit on the heavy side. I would think you’d do better with something between 300 and 350 grains. Check out T/C Maxi Balls or Buffalo Bullets. Best regards, Dudley

New to blackpowder shooting and this site. I have a Hawken .50 cal. rifle and what I believe is a Kentucky pistol of .44 cal. Inherited them both a few years ago. As far as I know, they have never been shot so am wondering about cleaning them up and trying them out. Any advise would be most appreciated.

Cheeseburger: Hope you are living in “paradise.” Yes, we can help you. Just call our Customer Service Department and tell them what you are looking for. We should have instruction manuals for both guns. However, one of the best source for full instruction is our video called BLACKPOWDER 101. I would highly recommend it, as it will give you a complete course covering everything you’ll ever need to know about how to safely load, shoot and clean your muzzleloaders. Best regards, Dudley

I have a cva optima pro .50 caliber which I enjoy very much, and it is a great shooter. It would be a even better shooter if I could lighten the trigger pull. Right now it breaks at 7 1/2 pounds as tested on a r.c.b.s. trigger gauge. Any suggestions on the best way to bring the trigger squeeze down to about 3 pounds. I would appreciate any input. Al

Regarding trigger pulls: We can adjust here at CVA if you’d like to send the gun in.

I have a CVA Firebolt that the trigger seems to pull quite hard. Should I send it back to CVA after I find out what the actual pull is? Do they charge? Seems I called 3-4 years back and CVA said to send it in but could not guarentee they would change it. They would check to see if it was in there spec. What do you think?
Monday, 18. April 2011
Craig: We can take them down to as low as 3.5 lbs. Dudley

I am interested in having CVA lighten the trigger on my Firebolt. What is the process in doing so? Cost? Turn around time? Thanks
Tuesday, 19. April 2011
Craig: The charge is $30. Just send the gun back with clear instructions as to what you need done. CVA Repairs, c/o BPI, 1685 Boggs Rd, Suite 300, Duluth, GA 30096. Thanks, Dudley

Dudley, would the entire rifle need to be sent in, or could I just send the receiver minus the barrel of my optima pro?
Thanks
Monday, 25. April 2011
Larrie: Good thinking! Yes, you can just sent the frame. That will make the shipping a lot easier and less expensive. Dudley

Dudley I emailed a while back on the CVA Firebolt with heavy trigger 6lbs. I want to send it to CVA per your earlier instructions and noticed in a earlier email I can send it minus the stock. That is ok. And what is the turn around time? You said fee is 30.00. Thank you

Carl,
I have a CVA 54 cal. Hawken muzzle loader. It’s the old side hammer style rifle. What is the recommended max powder charge for this weapon? I’m shooting Pyrodex powder, a sabbot, 300 grain 44 cal hollow point pistol bullet. My brothers shoot 45 cal. inline rifles with two pellets of powder which sound like elephant guns when shot. I use 90 grains of powder and my gun sounds so weak (sort of like spitting tobacco). 87 41-620 is written on the left side and 700Kp/cm2 G2 is written on the right side of the barrel. Thank you for your help.

Tom: I have always found 90 grains to be about perfect for a sidelock. On this particular gun, 100 grains would be the maximum recommeded charge. Best regards, Dudley
